In an established Calgary community this property offered water views to the rear and an eclectic mix of character homes along the street. Simple geometric forms and uniform exterior finishes and colour compliment the interior volumes and surfaces. Ideal for entertaining the social spaces orient to the rear walls of glass to capture the views and a retreat from City life.
Our challenge on this project was to create an estate home suited for entertaining on a grand scale while providing spaces of an intimate scale for family enjoyment. The exterior features an extensive use of natural materials - timber and stone - as well as varied roof lines and massing to provide visual interest in individual elements along extended facades. The interiors repeat the varied use of natural finishes in a series of open rooms complemented by pockets of space comfortable for 2 to 4 individuals.
This inner city corner site was partnered with unique design criteria presented by clients – create a strong rustic aesthetic that still fits the neighbourhood. This was achieved with a significant amount of heavy timber detailing, both inside out, as well as natural stone and siding finishes. In addition, sheltering rooflines, warm colours and native landscaping make this home both unique and inviting.
This unique and private building site within an existing golf course in the City of Calgary allowed for some creative thinking and structural challenges. Developing a lodge-like feel for the entry and living room needed to be balanced with comfortable living spaces for a family of four. Tall timber trusses and curved beams provide support and character for larger spaces while detailed windows and wood interiors provide warmth throughout the home.
The semi-detached mountain chalet combines warm and comfortable interiors with a rustic modern exterior. The wall of glass faces south to provide passive solar heating, spectacular mountain views and significant visual interest for the exterior. The efficient floor plan also provides open spaces for social gathering and comfortably sleeps 16 adventurers.
This remote Rocky Mountain retreat on an 8 acre treed parcel offered both challenges and rewards from a design perspective. Perched at the crest of the site were stunning views to the north and sunny walkout to the south. This timber frame structure was built from the existing trees that once stood on the land. An energy efficient building envelope, passive solar design and compact building footprint contributed to the sustainable design objectives of this project. The result is a spacious and comfortable escape from urban life that blends with its environment.
To soften the edges of this inner city modern, the geometry and cool palette were complemented with natural wood elements both inside and out. With custom interior elements including a two storey feature wall in the foyer, this home's spatial flow defies its modest footprint. Extensive use of glazing along the front, rear and ceiling planes combine with the light finish palette to provide bright and comfortable spaces throughout.
This underutilized land parcel had served as a parking lot bordering a residential area and an active industrial site. The concept emerged for 10 New York Brownstone homes that captured the character of the community along with the historic Ramsay Crossing building in the immediate area. Exterior details such as vintage brick and Tyndall stone lintels and sills enhance the front facade. The front door porthole design and the multi-paned windows evoke the feel of an old warehouse. Unique floor plans consist of one and two bedrooms, loft spaces, sunrooms and rooftop patios.
This inner city development on two 30 foot lots is evidence that detail and space need not be sacrificed on narrower lots. Gable and hip roofs combine with natural materials to create a welcoming Arts & Crafts exterior, while the interior is both open and modern. Interior floor plans included a custom kitchen design and built-ins, art niches and lighting. Varied floor and ceiling heights add to the spatial feel of the home. This home also highlights a number of green features including interior finishes and fixtures, heat systems, windows and insulation upgrades.
Working carefully with our client’s design criteria, we set out to design a home of significant size but modest profile and extensive detail. An eclectic mix of Arts & Crafts and French country, the inviting scale of this home is achieved through the sheltering rooflines and natural materials. The welcoming porch and foyer lead the visitor to a grand 3-story walkout with sweeping downtown views and green space access.
These homes provided the opportunity to present traditional finish materials in a modern context. The variety of house styles within this transitioning inner city neighborhood created the ideal backdrop for this experiment. Brick and timber meet in a modern interpretation of the over-sized infill. The character extends through the homes' interiors where bright open spaces are tempered with clean natural finishes to create a comfortable dwelling for the modern family.
The size of this lot allowed for significant setbacks and landscape details to complement the Arts and Crafts details. The corner turret and wrap-around porch provide the transition point for the exposed gable facades. Natural timbers, stone and shingles enhance the warmth of the home while multiple rooflines provide visual interest. The character of home changes in relation to the viewer’s perspective.
